Antituberculosis drug, a sodium salt of aminosalicylic acid. Aminosalicylate sodium (para-aminosalicylate sodium) has a bacteriostatic effect but it is active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis only. It is active against actively growing Mycobacteria and has almost no effect against those in the resting phase.
It reduces the likelihood of bacterial resistance to isoniazid and streptomycin.
It used only in combination with other anti-TB drugs to slow down the development of drug resistance.
